Djurdjević Bridge

Djurdjevic Bridge is one of the most grandiose sights of Montenegro. It is located above the Tara River, the canyon of which is the largest in Europe and the second deepest in the world after the American Grand Canyon. The length of the bridge is 365 m, the maximum height is 172 m. At the time of construction it was the biggest automobile arched bridge in Europe.

The structure was built in 1938-1940, and during the Second World War, partisans, with the help of one of the creators of the bridge, engineer Lazar Yaukovich, blew up the central arch. The explosion of the longest flight destroyed the only passage of the canyon in the area, which led to the halt of the Italian offensive. The engineer developed a scheme for laying the explosives, and fortunately, managed to do so so that after the war the bridge was easily restored. After some time, the Italian occupation troops arrested Lazar Yaukovich and executed him. The monument to the engineer is installed at the entrance to the bridge. Surprisingly, the modern name - "Djurdjevic Bridge" - arose from the name of the owner of the farm, located near the bridge, and not an architect or a heroically deceased engineer.

The bridge has repeatedly become a participant in filming. In 1969, the Yugoslav film "Bridge" was shot here, dedicated to the events of the Second World War. And in 1978 they were filming Hollywood film "Hurricane with Navarone" based on the novel by Alistair Maclean, where he was filmed Harrison Ford.

Djurdjevic's bridge in the canyon of the Tara River is a place visited by tourists all the year round, so a certain infrastructure gradually developed around it. There is a parking lot, a cafe, a camping site and a small market. In the immediate vicinity of the bridge you can raft on the river or ride more than 300 meters on the zip-line.
